All it takes to win a half million dollar home is a simple essay about what independence means to you, along with a $100 entry fee, and you've been entered in the "contest".
Very creative marketing, and a slow down in the higher end home market have led to builders and real estate investors "giving" away houses. Technically they are giving them away, but they are not losing anything on the deal either. If they are able to effectively market to 5,000 people along the Wasatch Front, and convince them to enter the contest for only a $100 entry fee, they stand to bring in $500,000 in entry fees. Not bad.
If I were a gambling man, or a half decent writer, I would actually give this thing a shot. The risk/reward ratio is incredible. $100 for a $500,000 house. and at 5,000 to one odds (your odds would obviously be better if you count yourself to be a decent writer).
